If you bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in fees a year, you can get paid tens of millions. At this point of your career, the pay is highly dependent on how good you are with clients and the amount of business you bring in. With performance bonus, Goldman Sachs Partner Managing Directors can bring home several million dollars in a single year, which makes it one of the highest paying jobs in finance. A Partner Managing Director at Goldman Sachs, for example, earns $950,000 in base salary alone. They’re not only responsible for bringing in the business in the first place, but also responsible for delivering the advisory service in a high-quality manner to the clients. Investment Banking Managing Directors are responsible for the entire deal process. They are responsible for overseeing the work streams, thinking through what work is needed to be done and making sure they’re done correctly and on time by the Analysts and Associates. Investment Banking Vice Presidents are almost always those who have prior investment banking Analyst or Associate experiences. Top performing Associates usually work for 3-4 years and then get promoted to Vice President. For this reason, Associates also need to have a solid technical foundation. Associates are responsible for managing Analysts and checking Analysts’ work. They’re either promoted from Analysts or MBAs hired from business schools. Investment Banking Associates are usually 25-30 years old. Top analysts work for 2-3 years and then get promoted to Associate. The compensation is usually structured in the form of a signing bonus + base salary + year-end bonus. Their primary responsibilities are to analyze and value companies (which we teach in our Lumovest courses). Banks hire analysts straight out of undergraduate programs. Investment Banking Analysts are usually 21-24 years old with a Bachelor’s degree from a top university. Naturally, because the investment banks earn ridiculous amount of fees for the work they do, they also pay their investment bankers ridiculous amounts of money. The investment bankers help companies raise the money they need from investors.īecause the large investment banks help big companies deal with transactions that are often in the billions of dollars, a meager transaction fee of just 0.5% of the transaction value could be worth tens of millions of dollars. But where are they going to get the money from? That’s where the investment bankers come into play. Despite being a public company, Tesla burns a lot of cash and need more money than they have in the bank to fund their expansion plans. Large companies often need more money to fund their expansion than they have available in their bank account. You can think of them like real estate brokers in this sense, except instead of brokering real estate between buyers and sellers, they’re brokering companies. Investment bankers help them structure the transaction, negotiate terms, determine the valuation (the price tag), etc. The process for a company to buy another business or to sell itself is very complicated and companies need to hire investment bankers to advise them through the process. This is known as mergers & acquisition (“M&A”). First, they help companies buy other companies or sell themselves to other companies:įor example, when Amazon bought Whole Foods in 2017, the investment bankers at Goldman Sachs advised Amazon on the purchase and the investment bankers at Evercore advised Whole Foods on the sale. Investment bankers really just do 2 things. They recruit directly out of college, where a 21-22 year old graduate can earn ~$160,000 in the first year. That being said, this one, too, seems to be in the midst of a change: On the Pixel 3, instead of being able to unlock your device entirely, Voice Match will display only a limited range of personal results - such as showing you your next appointment - on your lock screen when it recognizes your voice. Voice Match: The recently rebranded Voice Match option lets you access Google Assistant and optionally skip over your lock screen by saying "Hey Google" or "OK Google" - without having to provide any other form of authentication - once you've trained the phone to recognize your voice. Perhaps it's not entirely surprising, then, that Google omitted this option from its own recent Pixel 3 device - something that may serve as a sign that its days within Android on the whole are numbered. Questions also remain about just how secure it is and how easily it can be tricked by a photo or by someone who looks kind of like you (a possibility the feature's own setup screen even warns about). It lets you unlock your phone simply by holding it up to your face - but it isn't always reliable and takes just slightly too long to process compared to most other methods. Trusted face: Truthfully, this option is probably something you'll try for a few minutes and then disable. You can add any Bluetooth device that's been paired to your phone as a trusted device and then let it keep your phone unlocked whenever it's connected. It empowers you to tell your phone to skip the lock screen anytime it's connected to a specific Bluetooth device - say, your car's audio system or your gym headphones - when you know the phone will always be in your control. Trusted devices: If you'd rather have Google Smart Lock recognize a Bluetooth pairing, this next option's for you. You'll obviously want to be selective about what places you choose, but configuring this to recognize somewhere like your home can be a helpful way to avoid authentication where it's generally not needed. Trusted places: Perhaps the most useful Google Smart Lock element, this option allows you to set specific locations - by business name, street address, or manual map placement - at which your phone will never put up a lock screen or require authentication (in theory, at least the function can sometimes be a bit finicky and require occasional fine-tuning). Anytime your phone is set down or not in motion for more than a moment, it'll require authentication again. That way, if you unlock your phone to use it and then put it back into your bag or pocket while walking around, you won't have to unlock it again the next time you pick it up. On-body detection: Fire up this option, and your phone will remain unlocked whenever you're holding or carrying it - so long as you've already unlocked it once. When you tap it, you'll be prompted to enter your PIN, pattern, or password for protection - and then you'll see a list of available choices: To activate Google Smart Lock on Android, look for the "Smart Lock" option in the Security & Location area of your main system settings. It's the best of both worlds: effective Android security without unnecessary annoyances. On any reasonably recent Android device, you can set up Google Smart Lock to keep your phone unlocked in certain trusted situations but then to require your PIN, pattern, password, or biometric authentication at all other times. Google Smart Lock for Android securityįirst up: the Android front. Here's a step-by-step guide to turning Google Smart Lock on and taking full advantage of what it can offer across all of its relevant areas. Best of all? Once you set it up, it's simple as can be to use. But what is Google Smart Lock, exactly? It's an umbrella term that applies to three core areas: Chrome OS, where it allows your Android phone to unlock your computer Android itself, where it provides a variety of options for keeping your phone unlocked in preapproved, known-to-be-safe circumstances and within the Chrome browser, where it acts as a cross-platform password manager for both apps and websites.

It’s also a good idea to use extra insulation or waterproofing tape on connections for added protection.įinally, you need to connect all the string lights together so they’re powered by one source. You may also need to use additional materials such as zip ties or cable clips if you’ve hung the lights in an unconventional way. A drill can also be used for extra security if necessary. If you’ve used nails or screws, double-check that they are secure and won’t come loose when exposed to wind or rain. You may need to adjust the position of the lights or make sure that they’re securely attached. If you find any issues, now is the time to fix them. This is also a good time to make sure that the lights are evenly spaced and that there aren’t any gaps. Once the string lights are in place, switch them on to make sure that they’re working properly. It’s also a good idea to attach the lights at equal intervals for an even spread of light. It’s important to make sure that the lights are securely attached so they don’t come undone in windy weather. You can also use hooks to hang them from overhangs or eaves. If you’ve chosen a railing or post, use nails or screws to secure them in place. Now it’s time to attach the string lights. But whatever you do, make sure the lights are secure. You may also need to get creative with how you hang the lights if there’s no railing or post that can be used. Ideally, there should also be some sort of railing or post to attach the string lights onto. You should look for a secure spot that won’t be in danger of being knocked off or damaged by wind or rain. Now you need to decide where you want to hang the string lights. Step 4: Determine Where You’ll Hang the Lights It’s also a good idea to leave some slack in the lights for flexibility. This is also a good time to install any extra lights that you’ve purchased as spares. If there are any that don’t work, check the connections for any loose wires or damaged parts before continuing. Once you have your lights, take them out of the box and make sure that all the bulbs are working. Step 3: Unbox and Prepare the String Lights It’s also a good idea to buy extra string lights just in case. But even if your lights are rated for outdoor use, it’s still important to unplug them in bad weather or when not in use. Be sure to check that your lights are suitable for outdoor use so they don’t get damaged by rain or wind. I bought those elsewhere.Once you know the size of the area, purchase the right number of strings of lights for your Trex deck. For some reason, Home Depot only sells the lights and not the hubs, extensions, transformer, couplers, etc. Note: These lights do no come with the blue 'pig tail' connectors in the picture, the wires plug into a hub or other wires for easy installation. I did not use a staple gun to secure the wiring to the frame, it just seemed to risky to me. I used the light transformer and plugged it into the basement, into an outlet I wired off the outside backyard lights so the riser lights come on when the switch for the outdoor lights is turned on. I recommend plugging all the lights into the hub prior to mounting the hub. One thing I learned was to carefully plug the lights into the hubs as its pretty easy to bend one of the male wire prods. Each light has a short 6 inch wire coming out of it but each also comes with a longer 4' or so long extension wire. To install, I found the center of each step, drilled a 1" hole and ran the wires to a hub (sold separately). I installed them on both stairwells of my deck during construction and they provide safe lighting and add a real wow-factor in style. These are awesome and easy-to-install lights for deck stairs. 12/8/2023 0 Comments Flight simulator cockpit homeI realized maybe it would be helpful to document some of what I’m doing, both for myself and for others. Plus, it takes a lot of time to create content for a site like this.Īfter I started posting a few pictures of my progress people seemed interested in how I built this or that. I have certainly made my share of mistakes as I have fumbled my way through this. I’m by no means an expert compared to some out there. I wasn’t originally planning on creating a web site for my simulator. Why did you create this web site for your home built simulator? Honestly, if I could afford it I’d have a simulator of each, thank you. The Airbus A320 is a wonderful aircraft as well, and from what I understand it’s a lot more comfortable in the cockpit and certainly a lot more automated. That also means there are lots of people who have gone down the same road and can share their experiences. Which means there are lots of ready-made replica parts available everywhere. The same popularity in the real world also means they are popular in the sim world. That popularity also means longevity which means all the time and money I put into my sim won’t be for naught tomorrow if the plane is retired. You can fly short to long haul flights in it, in and out of small to large airports around the world. It has modern technology but it’s still a little old-school. Well, I happen to be a huge fan of the Boeing 737, and more specifically the Boeing 737NG (Next Generation). Looking out the window of my sim Outside view of my cockpit with my old projection display Why did you pick the Boeing 737-800 for your home cockpit flight simulator project? With a simulator at home I have plenty of time to do all of that whenever and however I feel like it. I want a Boeing 737 pilot to say “wow, this feels like my office.” I want to become familiar with real world airline operations, and perhaps I might someday even enjoy a multi-crew experience with someone who shares a similar passion. My goal is to one day be able to sit in the Captain’s seat and see, hear, and feel like I’m there. What are you trying to accomplish with your Boeing 737 flight simulator? It has turned into something I could never have imagined all those many years ago. My “want” became almost a “need.” Thus began a long (and expensive!) journey that is still going strong today. That’s when my home simulator really started to take on a life of its own.Īfter buying my first few replica components I was hooked. I was now at a point in life where I could afford to start building a home cockpit and the technology and parts were becoming available to help make that more easily a reality. All from the safety and comfort of my own home. To be able to flip switches, turn knobs, and look out a window and see the world below any time I felt like it. After more than 20 years of desktop simming I decided I wanted to fly more than a desktop. That only accelerated my passion for simulated flight.įast forward to 2008. Life, however, took me in a different direction. In 1990, at a young age, I got my Private Pilots license with the intent to fly commercially some day. That’s when my passion for aviation sparked. Something about the car’s air conditioning and watching those giant, beautifully shaped metal tubes flying overhead helped me to feel much better. It was the only way to settle me down when I had bad allergy fits.
